What is EIA?
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is the process of assessing potential impacts (positive and negative impacts) of a proposed development project on the environment, and identifying options to enhance or mitigate/minimize them. The main purpose of EIA is to inform decision makers of the potential impacts of a proposed project before a decision is made. EIA process reduces risk because it identifies key issues early in the life of a proposed project. There are stages involved in an EIA. These include screening, scoping, assessment and evaluation of impacts and development of alternatives, reporting, reviewing, decision making, monitoring, compliance, enforcement and auditing.
