Materials are thermodynamically unstable and potential corrosion problems and failures are unavoidable for poor choice of material or configuration by the designer, or carelessness on the part of the user. Lack of corrosion awareness can instigate corrosion problems during the design of a project. Neglecting to resolve the potential corrosion problems during the design phase will inevitably cause a significant direct cost in future - corroded equipment and unexpected shutdowns or equipment replacement.
